About Baveno Cooperation

The Baveno Cooperation is a recently formed official EASL consortium with a mission to set standards for the clinical management of patients with advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) with a particular focus on complications of portal hypertension.

The Baveno Cooperation is based on previous Baveno international consensus conferences that were responsible for providing world-renowned evidence-based clinical guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis and management of portal hypertension that also set standards for trial design and definitions of clinical endpoints and priorities for future research. Baveno recommendations are updated every 5 years and often adopted by major international society guidelines including the EASL and AASLD. The first initiatives were coordinated by the Baveno Honorary President Prof. Dr. Roberto de Franchis who hosted a consensus conference in Baveno, Italy. The Baveno guidelines are developed through meticulous consensus processes by experts in the field of portal hypertension and have evolved from its 1st edition (Baveno I in 1992 (1)) in response to advancing knowledge (2-6). They are currently available in its 7th edition (Baveno VII 2022), each edition collecting a huge number of citations.

The Baveno Cooperation has been historically established as a part of EASL's framework. Its primary role involves not only the organization of the 5-yearly consensus conferences but also the broader objective of establishing a global, interdisciplinary research network in portal hypertension aimed at tackling significant research needs highlighted during the Baveno consensus conferences. This endeavor is and will be realized through the promotion and facilitation of interaction and collaboration among researchers, the identification of areas for partnership with the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors, and dedicated efforts to secure research funding. In order to pursue these objectives, the Baveno Cooperation has set-up three ad hoc committees, namely: the Communications Committee, the Research Committee, and the Finance Committee.

The activities of the Baveno Cooperation are coordinated by its Executive and Steering committee that are advised by a Scientific Advisory Board. The Baveno statutes are approved by the EASL and form the basis of the operational agenda of the Baveno Cooperation.
